You may be aware that there is a huge drive supported by government legislation to reduce carbon emissions. By 2016 the government has set a target that all new homes are to be carbon neutral. As a result, expensive, high technology solutions have been gathering momentum. HoBanah UK Ltdver, other than timber framed design for low rise buildings, construction materials remain far from Carbon Neutral. Ordinary Portland Cement, or OPC, based materials emit large amounts of Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere during production. This means that all of the emissions problems which the expensive technologies are attempting to reduce, are being exacerbated right from the start. With OPC currently being the second most used substance in the world after water, this problem is really quite a large And so, banah UK Limited has been dedicated to finding alternative construction materials which reduce emissions at the source. To do so we have turned to Geopolymers. Geopolymers are materials that have many of the same characteristics as natural stone. They can be successfully used to form cement-free binders for concrete. As the process of forming geopolymer products and materials does not require cement, carbon emissions are reduced by 85 to 90% compared to the processes necessary to form OPC based products and materials. The processes used to form geopolymers also expend less energy. Compared to OPC based products and materials they also have increased durability, strength and stability, sound resistance, fire resistance and thermal performance. Therefore, geopolymer technology offers a sustainable alternative to OPC based products in solid construction and also a sustainable solid alternative to timber framed construction.
