• About Us : From a hillside cowshed in Mid Wales and a small craft based enterprise, Timberkits emerged in 1993 with a few mechanical model kit designs which CHAIN KEYre entirely novel and an instant success. The business grew steadily and moved to an attractive riverside site on the main road in 1999. New designs are continuously going through the process of tooling up and we try to respond to customers particular requirements in a way that product lines based abroad are unable to do. We have a well established customer base of small independant retailers, also Hamleys of Regent Street and several educational and gift catalogues. The wood we uses is mainly a variety of straight grained pine wood that has very few knots. Blemishes in the wood cause innacuracies in drilling which in turn reduce the mechanical efficiency of the models. We have developed our own specialist machinery so that many of the 40-50 components are produced semi automatically. Since August 2002 we have opened a visitor centre here where Timberkits can be seen and a fascinating permanent display of Automata. We also offer practical experience to school groups and courses for adults as well as a cafe and shop in very pleasant surroundings. Timberkits are both a gift and a hobby; whereas many gifts are subject to whims of fashion, the creative delight in constructing our models is something that can be passed on from one generation to the next and is a welcome alternative in the age of keypad, screen and electronic bleep
