The Evolution of Kashmiri Carpet Industry: The Kashmiri Carpet industry traces its origins to Persia. This is evidenced by the fact that designs, palette and the weave seem to be "borrowed" directly from the Persian industry. Local folklore credits Sultan Zain-ul-Abadin as the pioneer for the industry in the fifteenth century. The training imparted by Persian craftsmen, specially invited by the Sultan, coupled with the skill set prevalent in the shawl weavers ensured that carpet weaving developed very rapidly. Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin provided further impetus for the industry by the creation of the Karkhanas or organized manufactories. However, with the decline of the Sultan's influence, the carpet industry suffered a period of languor till it was resuscitated by the ***** greatest flourishing of northern Indian culture, art, and imperial strength undoubtedly took place during the reign of the Mogul monarchs of the 16th and 17th centuries. Local historians attribute Emperor Jehangir as being the patron saint for the industry during the early seventeenth century. Under the broad governance of Emperor Jehangir, Akhun Mulla Ruhnuma and Ahmed Baig Khan are the two individuals identified as being instrumental in reviving the fortunes of the carpet industry in Kashmir. Akhun Mulla Ruhnuma was an eminent scholar and a saint whereas Ahmed Baig Khan served as the Governor of Kashmir between 1614
