In addition, korea's textile industry finds itself increasingly squeezed by advanced countries, armed with advanced technology and dominance over design and fashion trends, and developing countries, blessed with an abundance of natural resources and low-cost labor. As a result, the industry is now undergoing an extensive transformation in an effort to reform its chronic "high-cost, low-productivity" structure. The terms imposed by the international monetary fund(imf) and the coutinuing exchange rate devaluations make industrial restructuring even more critical. The goal of producing high-techonology, high-quality goods, highly valued on the global market, is forcing the industry to focus on the exports needed to regain a trade surplus and to bolster the national economy. In light of this, the textile indusry and the government are jointly striving to overcome adversity by focusing on management renovation, promotion of high value-added activities, development and application of new techonology, expanded use of automation and improving efficiency and long-term profitability.
