Two qualities make the guanaco a particularly interesting farm animal: 1. Produces a high quality fiber 2. Thrive under a wide range of conditions. Guanacos are classified in the family of Camilidae and are South America's largest land mammal. They can be found in Tierra del Fuego to 4000 meters along the Andes of northern Chile, Peru and Argentina. Guanaco have a double coat similar to cashmere; the under coat is a fine fiber one of the finest natural fibers in the world, and boasts a uniform and very pale camel color. Fiber diameter is a key factor in determining the potential economic value of fiber produced. The average of Guanaco is typically around 14-18 although with selective breeding, the fiber diameter can be brought down. This is the measurement that interests spinners as the longer the fiber, the finer it can be spun. It is its quality that allows to obtain a fresh cloth for summer as well as a warm one for winter
