Fucoidan is a uniquely-structured sulfated polysaccharide, a complex carbohydrate molecule that is found in the cell walls of brown seaweed. Particularly, Fucoidan is found in high concentrations in the cell walls of Laminaria and Undaria. The polysaccharide was named as “Fucoidan” when it was first isolated from brown algae by Kylin in 1913. Now it is named as “Fucoidan” according to IUPAC rules. For the past decade fucoidans isolated from different species have been extensively studied due to their varied biological activities, including radioactive protection, anticoagulant and antithrombotic, antivirus, antitumor and immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, blood lipids reducing, antioxidant and anticomplementary properties, and therapeutic potential in surgery.
