(3880) has acquired a 34% stake in Saigon Paper Corp for an estimated 1 billion yen, The Nikkei learned Friday.Through the private placement of new shares, Daio has become the largest shareholder in Vietnams second ranked manufacturer of such consumer paper products as tissues.The Ho Chi Minh City based firm had sought funds to build a new factory, Daio and the Development Bank of Japan made a joint investment, with the bank taking a 14% stake. A machine for consumer products and two paperboard-production machines are slated to begin service at the new facility by August.Saigon Paper generates about 3.1 billion yen in sales a year. Its annual output capacity is around 18,000 tons for consumer products and roughly 53,000 tons for paperboard. It aims to boost sales to 15 billion yen by 2015.With its move into Vietnam, Daio has a presence in four Asian countries outside Japan.Profitability in the domestic consumer segment is deteriorating due to intense price competition.This has prompted Daio to set its sights on Southeast Asia, where paper demand is projected to grow.(The Nikkei April 23 morning edition)
