• Company Name : Soho Rice Premium Limited
  • About Us : Humble Beginning From a humble beginning in 1995 in a hamlet known to locals as Kain Kol outside a small village of Stong unbeknownst to any one at that present time, a birth of the next global rice brand was born. Stong, a small village some 221 kilometers from the center of Phnom Penh, Cambodia was and still is a land of nowhere in a global context. The village is pretty much a mix of resident of subsistence farmers and fishermen whose livelihood depends very much on the bounty of the seasonal tide of the mighty Tonle Sap river. Soho Rice was born in 1995 but not with this name nor with this current vision of global ambition to be the pivotal force in the drive to be the dominant contributor toward the success of the global food security initiative. A humble beginning it was... Mrs. Sokha Ng after not too long of a marriage to her husband Sopheap Men has two beautiful children, a girl and a boy whose names are Mouykea Khan and Sophea Khan, decided with a stroke of beautiful luck or maybe a spark of genius to start moving outside the village to a hamlet of Kain Kol and started buying a small plot of land for rice cultivation. The most ambitious objective at that time for Mrs. Ng was to own one plot of land about one hectare in size so she and her family can grow rice for their own personal use and whatever maybe left over from the generosity of mother nature during each harvest season was to be traded and sold for a meager value to support the day to day needs of a growing family. As time passes, the bounty of the mighty Tonle Sap river was most of the time very generous and the size of her land continued to grow. What started as subsistence farming grew little by little to a small shop offering each years harvest to the local village. Sometimes, the years harvest was not as expected. The Tonle Sap was not as generous and maybe mother nature has other plans. Because of this unpredictability of season to season, Mrs. Ng never had the ambition of setting up a business. Whatever leftover from harvest was not marketed as a business but as a trade for products and services that she may need for her family. Much later down the road she would have a small warehouse and a small rice mill to stock and to mill rice for the community. It was still not a business, it was never registered nor planned of as there was even no name for her informal business and the the community just knew her by first name basis and always refer to the small mill and warehouse as Mrs. Sokha. As of 2011, the total size of her land at this small hamlet is approximately 70 hectares where she built a rest area, restaurant, convenience mart and a guest house. The location of the farm is along the national road to Siem Riep so it does receive a decent amount of local and international tSoho Rice Premium Limitedists passing by which prompted her to invest in the extra income-generating business. Her land is no longer used for cultivation of rice, her land now is more like a large laboratory for testing different kinds of seed and different varieties of grain but her business still continues to grow. Not only does she supply milled rice to local community and local village but her rice is being sold in fresh market throughout Phnom Penh and Siem Riep. Because she no longer grow her own rice she has become a major player in the rice industry by being a collector for rice from subsistent farmers and she distributes to the market of the Kingdom. And yes... until now there is still no official name for her business. The force of change that slowly and gently entered the haven of Mrs. Ng started in 2005 when her daughter married a brass American who is by his own right an accomplished chronic entrepreneur. He owns a successful marketing, advertising consulting firm in Phnom Penh but forever restless in the search for the next big opportunity. One stroke of luck and one spark of genius happened again to the family in 2010. The one stroke of luck was on the 25th of July 2010; the Royal Government of Cambodia approved a ground breaking policy for rice export. The objective of the Royal Government of Cambodia was clear and simple: world domination of rice export. The one spark of genius that happened was one comment from Mrs. Mouykea Khan to her husband Justin G. Parker: why don't you make something big of my mothers rice business.
