For the past year, the Staxxon team had been developing a vertical folding container solution that addresses the cost and inefficiencies involved in moving empty intermodal containers by allowing up to five vertically folded containers to be folded and moved in the same space as one container. Honor all existing IMO/ISO/CSC container standards; and, 2. Preserve the structural integrity of IMO/ISO steel containers; and, 3. Honor existing container fleet owner, operator and vendor supply chain relationships; and, 4. Honor existing container workflow, labor and safety standards in ports, terminals and depots. Staxxon's primary technical objective is to develop a vertical folding container method for steel containers that would eliminate the most common commodity container cargo - air - and replace it with folded empty containers that would meet existing CSC structural and Staxxon LLCathertight standards. Staxxon's top business objective is to provide a retrofit and new container approach to vertical folding that adds incremental cost which is recovered rapidly from operational cost savings (fewer "lifts") and improved utilization (e.g., better load densification.) Staxxon's top environmental quality objective is to reduce the number of vessel movements at sea as well as rail and truck movements at ports related to empty containers. While competitors have focused their environmental objectives around the use of composite materials to replace steel, Staxxon has focused on the much larger environmental challenge and near term benefits of reducing sea-going vessel movements through vertical folding and nesting. In addition, Staxxon's retrofit folding method allows newer existing container fleets to be repurposed to address sea lanes and routes with high empty imbalance scenarios instead of requiring wholesale replacement of existing container fleets. US patent 7,703,632 was issued on 27 April 2010 covering the core Staxxon folding methods to Staxxon's founder and CEO, George Kochanowski. Other patents are published and pending.
